IGNITION & LOCK REPAIR

Ignition problems, fixed at your vehicle

Luxury Automotive Locksmith LTD repairs and replaces damaged car ignitions and door locks in Vancouver and Metro Vancouver, 24 hours a day, and extracts keys that have snapped in the ignition or a lock. The work happens at your vehicle, so most cars do not need a tow.

An ignition cylinder wears with use. A worn key, a damaged wafer or a seized cylinder can leave the key sticking, refusing to turn, or broken off inside.

What we repair

  • Broken keys in the ignition or a door lock
  • Worn or damaged ignition cylinders
  • Seized or sticking ignitions
  • Jammed or stiff door locks
  • Re-keying an ignition so it works with a new key

DIAGNOSE FIRST

How we find and fix the fault

1. We listen to the symptoms. Does the key stick, refuse to turn, or turn without starting the car? The answer points to the key, the cylinder or the steering lock.

2. We inspect the cylinder. We check the key, the wafers and the cylinder at your vehicle before anything is replaced.

3. We repair or replace, then test. We extract broken pieces, repair or replace the cylinder, cut a fresh key if needed, and test the ignition and locks before we leave.

SIGNS OF TROUBLE

Signs your ignition or lock needs attention

Stop forcing the key. Forcing it can snap the key inside the cylinder and turn a small repair into a bigger one.

  • The key will not turn and the steering wheel feels locked
  • A piece of the key has broken off inside

CLEAR ANSWERS

Car ignition repair questions, answered

Straight answers from Luxury Automotive Locksmith LTD. More in our locksmith FAQs.

Three usual suspects: a worn key, a damaged cylinder, or a steering lock holding the wheel. Rock the wheel slightly while you turn the key. If nothing gives, stop, because more force risks snapping the key, and we can look at it where the car is parked.

Usually yes. We remove the broken piece with care so the cylinder survives wherever possible, then cut you a new key. If the cylinder is damaged, we can repair or replace it.

If a fresh, correctly cut key still sticks or spins loosely, the cylinder is the likely culprit. We inspect it first and replace it only when a repair will not hold.

Probably not. The steering lock locks the wheel when the car is off, and tension on the wheel can pin the key. Ease the wheel left and right while turning the key. If it stays stuck, we diagnose it on site.

Most of the time, yes. Grit, wear and a damaged cylinder are the usual causes. We inspect it, repair or replace the cylinder, and cut a fresh key at the same visit if yours is worn.

On many vehicles. Re-keying is common after a key is lost or stolen, because it makes the old key useless. We confirm what your car allows on the phone before we set out.

Rarely. We repair and replace ignitions where the car is parked. If a particular car needs workshop-only work, we tell you on the phone before any call-out. Need a key too? See car key replacement and programming.
